Description
Vintage Miao cotton silk tribal textile wedding blanket handwoven black geometric Hmong wall hanging tapestry China hill tribe AM52The blanket is constructed from 3 panels sewn together; each panel was hand woven on a back-strap loom which accounts for the narrow gauge of each of the 3 panels (the loom width is restricted by the width of the weavers back). The cotton base was then hand embroidered with a striking black cotton zig-zag geometric pattern with pink, purple, yellow and gold suns or stars in silk.
The most prominent symbol on the piece is the repeating swastika, an ancient symbol for prosperity and good fortune, life, the sun, fire, etc... The symbol is over 10,000 years old and is common in Buddhism and Hinduism, among many other religions. It is a controversial symbol and that is something to be considered if purchasing this textile.
I do not purchase textiles with swastika designs because they represent Nazism; I condemn it. I purchase them knowing the positivity they represent for the makers of these textiles and I hope that we can augment and celebrate this positivity while at the same time diluting the negative. Of course, it is a pretty design, too.
If you are interested in purchasing this item as Nazi decoration...don't do it.
The condition is faded but excellent. The cotton is thick and robust and sturdy.
