Vintage Large Asian 27" Red Lacquered Bamboo Decorative Charger Plate with Stand

For your consideration we offer a fabulous decorative red lacquered bamboo charger or platter with stand. An impressive statement piece measuring 27” in diameter, thin rotating lines of red compose the mesmerizing essence of this decorative bowl. Talented artists patiently elaborated the work by hand, its natural materials representing a fiery cultural expression. To create this piece, coiled bamboo basketry is first carved on a lathe into the desired shape. A mixture - obtained from tree sap and ashes of burnt rice paddy husks - is then applied to the object. Upon exposure to air the mixture dries to form a seal that is polished before another coat is applied. This process is repeated until a rigid base is formed, and a final polishing is executed with sandpaper. Then several coats of pure lacquer are applied with drying periods in between each coat. The work is partially polished with sandpaper according to a predetermined pattern - generally concentric - and a final light coat of lacquer is applied to the surface, leaving the object to dry for several days. The final coat is washed with water and polished with powdered fired clay, affording an irresistible sheen. There are a couple of areas of minor separation between the bamboo strips. These areas are stable and not distracting, but are visible on close inspection. A small nick is seen on the edge, and while it’s not intended, it is concealed and stabilizes the dish perfectly on the stand when the imperfection and stand are conjoined together. This extraordinary high style piece is in good vintage condition overall, and displays well.
