Eye Swivel Snap Shackle is made of durable Type 316 stainless steel, and the shackle features a spring-loaded captive pin. The captive pin stays with the swivel snap shackle as it cannot be removed from the body, making these shackles a valuable commodity for rigging, sailing, and marine applications. In order to open the pin, it must be pulled to engage the opening. This is popular for marine use as a sailing shackle because they can’t be accidentally dropped in the water. One of the positives of this quick release shackle is it can be used quickly and with one hand, which makes this type of shackle excellent for jobs where speed is important. This swivel shackle also has a swivel at one end that rotates 360 degrees and helps prevent tangling, which makes it ideal to use with high-movement items such as jib or spinnaker halyards, fishing, or applications where a quick and easy release is required. The stainless steel shackle, often called Marine Grade Stainless Steel, is great to use for nautical applications, damp environments, or high chloride marine applications. The Type 316 grade contains molybdenum, which is made to prevent corrosive effects of salt water. Keep in mind that while swivel-style rigging hardware can be used for a variety of applications, it’s extremely important to check the working load limit (WLL) of the snap shackle to ensure it will work for your intended use. Always ensure the pin is straight and properly engaged. This type of shackle generally has a lower working load limit than comparable bolt type or pin type shackles. For this reason, snap shackles are not recommended for heavy-duty applications. Shackles should be inspected before each use. If you see bending on the body or pin, remove the shackle from use and dispose of it. As with all equipment with stated load limits, these strengths limits are based on proper use. Improper use will decrease strength and may cause the shackle to fail.
