Jaw Swivel Snap Shackle is made of durable Type 316 stainless steel. This swivel shackle features a jaw swivel on one end that can be rotated 360 degrees, which helps prevent tangling. Each end of the swivel snap shackle carries a different pin. One end is a spring-loaded captive pin for easy connect and disconnect. The other pin is kept in place by a “key ring” that must be removed before the pin can be removed from the jaw. The captive pin stays with the stainless steel shackle as it cannot be removed from the body, making these shackles a valuable commodity for rigging, sailing, and marine applications. This is popular for marine use because they can’t be accidentally dropped in the water. One of the positives of this sailing shackle is it can be used quickly and with one hand, which makes this type of shackle excellent for jobs where speed is important. These stainless steel shackles are made for durability as it contains Type 316, the most common type of stainless steel used in nautical applications, damp environments, or high chloride marine applications. The Type 316 grade contains molybdenum, which is made to prevent corrosive effects of salt water. Keep in mind that while swivel-style rigging hardware can be used for a variety of applications, it’s extremely important to check the working load limit (WLL) of the snap shackle to ensure it will work for your intended use. Always ensure the pin is straight and properly engaged. This type of shackle generally has lower working load limits than comparable bolt type or pin type shackles. For this reason, snap shackles are not recommended for heavy-duty applications. Shackles should be inspected before each use. If you see bending on the body or pin, remove the shackle from use and dispose of it. As with all equipment with stated load limits, these strengths limits are based on proper use. Improper use will decrease strength and may cause the shackle to fail.
